This workshop will take place in Sparta, in the south-eastern Peloponnese.
Visiting one of the main centers of oil production in Greece, children will have the chance to discover why the olive tree became the primary symbol of Greek culture and civilization.
First stop will be an olive grove; olive harvesting will be our first task, while we get our hands dirty by hand picking olives.
After we enjoy our olive themed pic nic, we will head to the Museum of the Olive and Greek Olive Oil. Here we will take out pencils and colors and explore art, symbols and traditions around the olive tree and olive oil. We will finish our journey with a visit to a local bakery for the best olive oil cookies in town!
Some words about methodology;
In this workshop kids will have the chance to experience a side of agricultural life. Inspired by Greek customs, art and agriculture, this approach will involve children in the process of outdoor discovery and hands on learning.Children will roll up their sleeves in order to explore why the olive tree plays such a role, both, in Greek history and every day modern life.
